What is gesture? The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines it as ‘a significant movement of limb or body’ or ‘use of such movements as expression of feeling or rhetorical device’ [9]. In this sense gesture includes any kind of bodily movement or posture which transmits a message to the observer. The message can be deliberately intended and expressed in some accepted code, as when the sender winks, smiles, nods or points; it can also be inadvertent and expressed symptomatically, as when he or she blushes, grimaces with pain, or twitches with embarrassment. Some of these gestures are intended to accompany speech. Others, like the sign languages of the deaf and dumb or ‘emblematic’ gestures like thumbing one’s nose, are substitutes for it. The body can also transmit messages without any movement at all. There is no attribute of the human body, whether size, shape, height or colour, which does not convey some social meaning to the observer. It is only very recently that historians have started to become interested in gestures as a key to the cultural codes and sensibilities of the past. This growing interest seemed a good reason to organize a colloquium on the history of gestures with historians, art historians, philologists, anthropologists and folklorists, in order to explore the possibilities of this promising approach to cultural history. Essentially, it is the issue of our research work.
The object is gesture. The subject is the gestures’ meanings in modern communication.
The aim of the work is to get know the meanings of widespread gestures in society in order to realize the situation itself.
Gestures can be powerful means of communicating affirmation and solidarity and expressing dissent. Class, gender and generational relationships are all expressed and reproduced in gestural codes; so, too, are ethnic identities. Gesture, in other words, can be the battleground over which divergent visions of social and political order are fought. Gesture in our lives is very subjective. What evokes one reaction in one person may evoke a very different reaction in someone else. Sometimes this is due to personal knowledge, and other times due to cultural background. We have analyzed the material according to the corresponding theme and found out gestures’ meanings. Having analyzed the theory part of our work, we got to know that gestures are one of the additional communication means between interlocutors. And everybody should be aware of its significance as it has an influence on the communication success. It depends on its way of reproduction and country itself. If you visit another country, you should know about it. What is more, gestures are becoming modern and one of the vivid ways of our creativity and individuality expression. As a result, gesture drawing has appeared. All the information about history facts has confirmed the idea that gestures have been forming and developing for a long period of time; and even ancient people have realized its essence. Therefore, great changes have happened in history of gestures since the ancient times. We have also carried out some practical work. Having examined the practical part of our work, you see that there are some differences among gestures. It depends on the way of their producing and expressing. In order to realize all their secrets it is recommended to look through the corresponding literature and remember it. Moreover, there are a lot of ways of gestures recognition and deception gestures is one of them. Everyone should know about them in order not to be deceived. They are mouth covering, a touching to a nose, an eye rubbing, a lobe rubbing, a neck scratch, a collar adjustment and fingers in a mouth.
The practical significance: the copies of the work can be used for carrying on the research work according to the corresponding theme or problem. Moreover, the gathered appendix can be used as the additional information for reading.
